UNDERSTANDING ORGANIC AIRBRUSH TANNING
How It Actually Works
When the solution is airbrushed on, you immediately see darker skin color. This is only a cosmetic bronzer that gives a guide for the artist and gives you instant appearance of a tan. The actual spray tan begins to develop in about an hour and will be really noticeable after you rinse off that initial bronzer. For regular solutions, it may take 12 hours to fully darken. For the express rinse options, it takes up to 24 hours for the tan to fully set. Even once you rinse the bronzer off at your designated time, the DHA will still continue to darken up.
The Science: What’s DHA?
Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, is the ingredient in spray tans that creates the appearance of a tan for 7-10 days. DHA is a simple sugar that, when exposed to the amino acids in the outermost layer of skin, causes a reaction similar to when a cut apple turns brown. Completely natural and safe.
PRE-WEDDING SPRAY TAN TIMELINE
4-6 Weeks Before: Schedule Your Trial Tan
Book your trial spray tan so you can test the color match for your skin tone, make sure you love the results, adjust timing if needed, perfect your preparation routine, and feel completely confident in your choice.
24-48 Hours Before Your Appointment
Complete All Body Treatments First
Schedule these at least 24 hours before your spray tan: waxing services, facial treatments, massage appointments, manicures and pedicures, and any other spa services. This ensures optimal, even results.
12 Hours Before Your Tan
Time for exfoliation and hair removal. Thoroughly exfoliate using body scrub or exfoliating gloves. Complete all shaving. Focus extra attention on rough areas like elbows, knees, and ankles. Use a sugar-based body scrub for best results.
Here’s why this matters: proper exfoliation is absolutely essential for a flawless, even tan that lasts through your entire celebration.
Day of Your Spray Tan Appointment
Show up with clean, dry skin. Skip all moisturizers and lotions. No makeup application. Avoid deodorant. Come with completely product-free skin. These products create barriers that prevent proper color development.
What to wear? Dark, loose-fitting clothing works perfectly. Maxi dresses are ideal. Flip flops or sandals on your feet. Avoid tight undergarments. For winter weddings, boots with socks and bring an umbrella. Never, and I mean never, wear jeans or leggings immediately after your tan.

AFTER YOUR WEDDING SPRAY TAN: THE FIRST 24 HOURS
Immediate Post-Tan Care
Plan for some relaxation time after your appointment. Avoid water contact during development time. Stay away from activities that cause friction on your skin. Don’t shower, sweat, or get wet. For express solutions, you can rinse after 1-4 hours. For regular solutions, wait 8-12 hours.
First Shower Guidelines
Your initial rinse should be warm water only. No soap or shampoo during that first rinse. Pat your skin dry gently, don’t rub. Allow 12-24 hours before using other products. A small amount of face moisturizer is fine if needed. Remember, the color continues developing for 12-24 hours even after rinsing.
Maintaining Your Wedding Glow
Here’s how to make your tan last: moisturize twice daily with paraben-free, alcohol-free lotion. That even, flawless fade requires consistent hydration. Use tan extender products for extra longevity. With proper care, your tan will last 7-10 days.
What to limit: chlorinated pools and hot tubs (seriously, just limit your time), hot baths and saunas, steam rooms, excessive sweating for 24 hours after application, and intense exercise before your first rinse.
PLANNING YOUR WEDDING TAN SCHEDULE
Optimal Timing for Your Celebration
Two days before your wedding is ideal timing. Here’s an example: if you’re getting married on Saturday, get sprayed on Thursday. This allows time for two showers, removes excess bronzer completely, gets your tan to peak color and evenness, and ensures that fresh, natural glow in photos.

Whether you’re planning a beach honeymoon, outdoor wedding ceremony, or simply maintaining your spray tan, proper sun protection is essential.
What to look for: broad-spectrum protection covering both UVA and UVB rays. SPF 30 minimum, though SPF 50 is better for extended outdoor exposure. Lotion-based formulas work best. Avoid anything with alcohol and mineral oil which can fade spray tans. Look for reef-safe ingredients if you’re heading to tropical destinations. Water-resistant formulas are key for swimming and active honeymoons.
When to apply: 15-30 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every 2 hours. Definitely after swimming or sweating. And yes, even on cloudy days because 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds.
Spray Tan-Friendly Sunscreen Tips
Your organic spray tan and sunscreen can work beautifully together. Choose oil-free, lotion-based formulas. Avoid products with DHA because they’ll layer and create uneven color. Apply sunscreen as your final step after moisturizer. Reapplication won’t affect your tan when done properly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Will I look orange?
Not with professional application! Orange tans happen when there’s too much applied, too high of a concentration, or it’s left on for too long with express solutions. Both Steph and Haley are very conservative with first-time clients and gradually build to darker tans to ensure your skin type can handle the solution beautifully.
Can I still get sun while tanned?
Your spray tan does NOT protect you from UV damage. Always use lotion-based sunscreen without alcohol or mineral oil.
What about swimming during my honeymoon?
You can absolutely swim in pools, hot tubs, and the ocean. Just limit your time in chlorinated water to extend your tan’s life.
Special considerations for nursing parents
Spray tanning is completely safe while nursing. Wear a bathing suit top or pasties during application, and wipe any solution from your skin before feeding until after your first rinse.
